Federal appeals court halts Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose tariffs

A federal appeals court ruled on Friday that President Donald Trump cannot use emergency powers granted by Congress to impose tariffs. However, the ruling won’t take effect until mid-October, giving the administration time to appeal to the Supreme Court. 

The 7-4 ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit could result in the administration having to repay billions of dollars worth of duties, according to Politico. The ruling could affect deals the Trump administration has struck with the European Union, Japan, South Korea among the major trading partners. 

It will also affect the baseline tariffs of 10% on nearly all countries.
