Franklin Graham says he 'misspoke' when he called for CPAC to help Trump get reelected in 2028

Evangelist Franklin Graham clarified Friday comments he made at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Grapevine, Texas, this week, where he called for CPAC voters to help President Donald Trump get reelected.

Graham, the son of iconic evangelist Billy Graham, spoke at the annual conference Thursday. During his closing remarks, he mentioned that he was fond of the president and said the country will never see anyone else like Trump.

“That's why it's important that we do everything that we can to try to get him reelected,” Graham said. “He stands not only for religious freedom. He stands up for Christians like no president we've ever had. And he's not afraid. He's not ashamed of the name of Jesus Christ. Other people are ashamed. He's not ashamed. And I just appreciate that so much about him.”

A spokesperson for Graham told the Christian Post that the evangelist misspoke in his remarks and meant to say that Trump's policies should be reelected in 2028, not the president, who is term-limited.

"It was a privilege to speak at CPAC,” Graham said in a statement. “Early in my remarks, I made the point that 'President Trump is not on the ballot, but his policies are.' As I closed, I meant to say that we need to reelect President Trump’s policies, but misspoke. I appreciate the opportunity to clarify any confusion."

The comment comes after Trump has repeatedly joked about seeking a third-term in office, but acknowledged in October that he is not allowed to run for a third term because of the 22nd Amendment.

The amendment was added to the Constitution after President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to four terms in office.
