Nearly 1,000 people living in Toledo, Ohio, have been ordered to evacuate following an explosion at a chemical trucking company on Tuesday evening around 9:30 p.m.

According to a statement from the company, MC Tank Transport, Inc., the chemical released was glycidyl methacrylate, which is used to "make certain plastics, paints and coatings perform better."

One person was injured in the incident, Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz of Toledo said in a news conference on Wednesday morning, the New York Times reported.

Residents within one mile of the company's terminal have been ordered to evacuate. Kapszukiewicz said the area is primarily industrial, but the city is concerned about additional explosions, because the leaking tank is near others.

Toledo Fire and Rescue urged people within a three-mile radius of the incident to shelter in place, keep pets inside, close all doors and windows, and turn off ventilation.
