California Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday criticized the Trump administration’s decision to deploy 300 members of the California National Guard to Portland, Oregon.

Newsom argued that the decision is an unlawful overreach and said his state will sue to block it.

He argued that Trump is “using the U.S. military as a political weapon against American citizens” and said the deployment was “a breathtaking abuse of the law and power.”

The decision follows a recent federal court ruling that temporarily blocked the Trump administration from federalizing Oregon’s National Guard troops to deploy them in Portland.
