Trump adminstration eases restrictions on Anthropic's latest AI models

The federal government has eased restrictions on Anthropic’s latest Claude and Mythos 5 AI models, allowing the American-based AI company to release them to over 100 U.S. institutions that include major companies and government agencies.

The decision was announced late last week in a letter from the Commerce Department to Anthropic. 

“I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model,” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote in a letter Friday to Anthropic’s chief computer officer Tom Brown. 

He also said that “significant progress” had been made in the daily talks between the government and the company since the directive was imposed.

This easing comes after the White House earlier this month shut down Anthropic’s latest model, Claude Fable 5, and Claude Mythos 5 AI models, citing “national security” concerns and its potential to be exploited by bad foreign actors. 

However, the Commerce Department letter does not mention Fable 5 – the weaker version of Mythos which was available to consumers for a brief window. People familiar with the issue said they are also planning on releasing Fable, though it is unclear as to when, according to Semafor.
