X on Monday debuted its new "companions" feature for its premium AI, SuperGrok, featuring an array of AI-supported characters such as an anime goth girl and an anthropomorphic fox.

"Literally no one asked us to launch waifus, but we did so anyway," wrote XAI's Ebby Amir. "Update your Grok app now."

The term "waifu" refers to a fictional anime female character whom a fan considers to be attractive or representative of their romantic preferences.

Thus far, "Ani", the anime goth girl, and "Bad Rudy", the fox, are available through the X premium+ plan. Musk himself suggested that the debut characters were meant to target specific groups of software engineers, sharing a post from "Autism Capital" asserting that "Elon knows his audience. He hit both the g---ers and the furries, capturing 99% of the top 1% of software engineers worldwide."

Many of the reactions pointed to the appeal of the Ani character and quipped that her release would run counter to Musk's stated goal of revitalizing birth rates in western nations.
