Trump administration imposes 50% tariffs on Canadian goods after Ottawa fails to finalize trade deal

The Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods ranging from alcohol to hockey skates late Friday night after Ottawa failed to sign off on a trade deal reached earlier in the week.

The collapse of the trade deal between two once-close North American partners was confirmed by President Donald Trump's trade representative.

“Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week," U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told reporters, according to Politico. "Despite the U.S. offer to Canada to receive the best treatment of any major exporter to our market, new demands and walkbacks of other commitments by Canada upended the careful balance reached in the past days."

Canada immediately retaliated, with Prime Minister Mark Carney suspending trade negotiations with the United States and ordering retaliatory tariffs against American-made products.

"I have decided to suspend trade negotiations with the U.S. and have directed Canada's negotiators to return to Ottawa," Carney said. "They have worked hard, in good faith, to defend the interests of Canadians throughout these negotiations up until the very last minute."
