Trump claims Cornyn, Karl Rove would be partly to blame if Ken Paxton loses Texas Senate seat

The criticism comes as Paxton is locked in a tight race with Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico and comes after Cornyn lost his bid for reelection in the primaries earlier this year.

President Donald Trump slammed Texas GOP Sen. John Cornyn and Karl Rove on Thursday, stating it would be their fault and the fault of people like them if state Attorney General Ken Paxton fails to win Cornyn's Senate seat next month.

The criticism comes as Paxton is locked in a tight race with Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico and after Cornyn lost his bid for reelection in the primaries earlier this year.

The president also claimed  the pair are doing their best to make it difficult for Paxton to defeat Talarico and are thereby hurting the state and the country.

"John Cornyn who, after my Endorsement, lost the Primary to Ken by a very wide margin, and Karl Rove, who shouldn’t be allowed to spew his jealousy on FoxNews, should be ashamed of themselves," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "They are hurting Texas and, more importantly, hurting the United States of America.

"If Ken Paxton loses, it will be because of weak and ineffective Political Hacks like John Cornyn and Karl Rove, who have ineffectively opposed me for my entire political career," he added.

Trump urged Texas Republicans to rally behind Paxton, touting his success and popularity in the predominantly red state.

"Your favorite President is asking all of those who supported Senator John Cornyn to unite, and immediately switch your support to Ken Paxton," Trump said. "He will be a Great Senator, just like he is a Great Attorney General.

"We cannot take a chance on having a FREAKO, sometimes referred to as James TalaFREAKO, as our man in Washington, D.C., representing the magnificent people of the Great State of Texas," he added.

Cornyn blasted Paxton as a "lazy" campaigner earlier this year and said he was poor at fundraising. He has also failed to endorse Paxton since losing to him in May.
