Trump gave $45,000 holiday gifts to White House aides, according to disclosures

President Donald Trump gave holiday gifts valued as much as $45,000 to four White House aides, according to new financial disclosures. 

Trump gave gifts valued at $45,000 each to executive assistant Natalie Harp, communications advisor Margo Martin, and deputy director of Oval Office operations Chamberlain Harris, NBC News reported. The president also gave a $20,000 gift to director of Oval Office operations Walt Nauta. 

The gifts were listed in the staffers' annual financial disclosure forms that were published by the Trump administration this week. 

Harp, Martin and Harris have a salary of $150,000 annually, and Nauta is paid $175,000 a year, according to the White House’s salary disclosure report to Congress.

An unnamed White House official told NBC that the gifts are part of Trump's longstanding practice of giving Christmas gifts to "people in his orbit," which includes employees and aides. 

The gifts, the official said, were not related to the aides' duties and therefore entirely permissible under legal and ethical standards.
