Trump to meet with Oklahoma Gov Stitt on candidates to fill Mullin's open Senate seat
Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt's reportedly likely pick is oil magnate Harold Hamm
President Trump is to meet with Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt on Thursday over likely candidates for Sen. Markwayne Mullin's replacement in the Senate, according to a report.
Three anonymous sources told POLITICO about the meeting and likely candidates.
Trump tapped Mullin last week to replace Kristi Noem as Homeland Security secretary, leaving Stitt to appoint the senator's replacement.
Stitt is likely considering oil magnate Harold Hamm or his own senior adviser, Dustin Hillary, to replace Mullin, according to one source. If Stitt chooses to run for the Senate seat himself when it becomes vacant again later this year, it would make sense for him to lean more toward nominating Hamm, the source told Politico.
Mullin's replacement must agree to be a temporary placeholder and not run for the Senate seat in the next election, according to Oklahoma state law. Stitt is term-limited, and will leave the governor’s mansion in January.
Another source also said that Hamm, an 80-year-old billionaire and donor to Trump’s ballroom project, is who they expect Stitt to discuss with Trump.
