Trump says Homan will meet with Minneapolis mayor on Tuesday
Trump told Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz and Frey in separate calls that Homan will visit the city to help decrease tensions starting Monday, which comes after Vice President JD Vance visited the area last week.
President Donald Trump confirmed Monday that he spoke with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey amid heightened tensions over federal immigration enforcement operations, and said border czar Tom Homan will meet with Frey on Tuesday.
Protests in the city escalated earlier this month after the fatal shooting of a protester who was allegedly attempting to ram the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer over with her car. Another protester was killed over the weekend.
Trump told Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz and Frey in separate calls that Homan will visit the city to represent the administration starting Monday, which comes after Vice President JD Vance visited the area last week.
"I just had a very good telephone conversation with Mayor Jacob Frey, of Minneapolis," Trump posted on Truth Social. "Lots of progress is being made! Tom Homan will be meeting with him tomorrow in order to continue the discussion."
Frey confirmed the phone call in a post on X, stating he appreciated the conversation and that his main goal was to end the Department of Homeland Security's Operation Metro Surge, but indicated he was still committed to protecting migrants.
"Minneapolis will continue to cooperate with state and federal law enforcement on real criminal investigations — but we will not participate in unconstitutional arrests of our neighbors or enforce federal immigration law," he said in a thread on X. "Violent criminals should be held accountable based on the crimes they commit, not based on where they are from.
"I will continue working with all levels of government to keep our communities safe, keep crime down, and put Minneapolis residents first," he continued. "I plan to meet with Border Czar Tom Homan tomorrow to further discuss next steps."
