President Donald Trump slammed California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom Wednesday night, claiming the governor was a "racist" and labeled a recent interview featuring the California leader as a "politically suicidal act."

Newsom drew backlash for his interview with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens last month, after which he was accused of talking down to black people when touting his 960 score on the SATs.

Newsom said he was making the comment to highlight his struggle with dyslexia and was not meant to be racist.

"Gavin Newscum’s interview weeks ago was, perhaps, the most self-destructive interview I’ve ever seen," Trump said in a Truth Social post Wednesday. "In one fell swoop, he took himself out of even being considered as the Presidential Nominee of the Crazy (as proven at the State of the Union Address) Democrats.

"Black people are angry because he is obviously a racist," Trump continued. "While we all want to be politically correct, having a mental disorder is not a positive campaign event. Also, this was a politically suicidal act ... He is no longer a viable presidential candidate."

Newsom has not announced a presidential bid for 2028 so far, but he has long been floated as a leading contender for the Democratic nomination after leading the most populous state in the country for eight years.
