Trump warns Iran is ruled by 'lunatics' after latest attack on US destroyers
The president said the three American destroyers were not harmed by Iran but that the enemy experienced "great damage," and its boats were "completely destroyed."
President Donald Trump confirmed Thursday that Iran fired on three American destroyers that were transiting the Strait of Hormuz and warned the country was "led by lunatics," who will be knocked "a lot harder" if a peace deal is not struck soon.
The United States and Iran exchanged missile strikes Thursday night, with the U.S. hitting an Iranian island and city. It comes amid reports that the U.S. and Iran are considering a one-page proposal that would halt hostilities for 30 days.
The president said the three American destroyers were not harmed by Iran but that Iran experienced "great damage," and its boats were "completely destroyed."
"These boats went to the bottom of the sea, quickly and efficiently," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Missiles were shot at our destroyers, and were easily knocked down. Likewise, drones came, and were incinerated while in the air. They dropped ever so beautifully down to the ocean, very much like a butterfly dropping to its grave!"
"A normal country would have allowed these destroyers to pass, but Iran is not a normal country," Trump continued. "They are led by lunatics, and if they had the chance to use a nuclear weapon, they would do it, without question. But they’ll never have that opportunity and, just like we knocked them out again today, we’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future, if they don’t get their deal signed, fast!
"Our three Destroyers, with their wonderful Crews, will now rejoin our Naval Blockade, which is truly a 'Wall of Steel,'" he added.
The strikes come after Trump halted Project Freedom on Tuesday, which was a military operation aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and guiding ships through the strait.
