Trump won't negotiate over territory with Putin: EU leaders

President Donald Trump told European leaders on Wednesday that he would not negotiate territorial matters with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the upcoming summit in Alaska, according to key European leaders.

Trump spoke with European heads of state on Wednesday to reassure them about his planned meeting with Putin later this week. EU leaders have loudly criticized the move, insisting that Trump ought not to conclude an agreement with Russia without their input and that of Ukraine.

German Chancellor Fredrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron corroborated Trump's promise, The Hill reported.

Reporting ahead of the summit has suggested the Russians are open to a ceasefire, should Ukraine be willing to cede disputed land. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has already rejected such a move.

Russia, in 2022, officially annexed four contested regions from Ukraine, none of which it currently controls in full. Both nations insist that the fate of their territories are non-negotiable and it remains unclear whether Trump will be able to broker a peace at all.
