Shooter still at large in Charlie Kirk shooting: CNN
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was shot on Wednesday at an event in Utah.
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was shot on Wednesday at an event in Utah and has been confirmed dead at the age of 31.
Multiple sources confirmed his passing to Just the News. Kirk was speaking at the Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
President Donald Trump also confirmed Kirk's death in a post on Truth Social.
"The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead," Trump wrote. "No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!"
Trump also ordered flags nationwide to be flown at half staff until Sunday evening in honor of Kirk.
Despite an initial statement from the school confirming that the suspect was in custody, the person initially arrested was apparently not the shooter, who remains at large, the school said.
Four agencies are investigating the assassination: The FBI, Orem Police, Utah Valley University Police and the Utah Department of Public Safety, the New York Times reported.
Warning: Graphic
Video footage showed Kirk speaking under a tent to a large crowd outdoors before being blown out off his stool.
Kirk has been one of the most influential voices on the right in recent years, notably founding Turning Point USA chapters at universities across the country and hosting speakers' summits for young conservatives.
Kirk was on a Turning Point USA tour at the time of his death. The tour, which was scheduled to stop in nine states, was intended to equip students "with the tools to push back against leftwing indoctrination in academia and reclaim their right to free speech."
"More than just a celebration of conservative momentum, this tour is a direct response to those trying to silence dissenting voices," a press release on the tour said, per Fox News.
