Cornyn, Tillis confirms plans to back Blanche, essentially clinching nomination

Sens. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Thom Tillis, R-N.C., issued a joint statement on Monday, confirming their plans to support acting Attorney General Todd Blanche for confirmation to the post.

The senators had sought written confirmation from the Department of Justice that it would abandon an "anti-weaponization" fund that it had briefly established as part of a settlement with the IRS over the leak of President Donald Trump's tax returns. Blanche obliged.

"We want to express our gratitude to Mr. Blanche and his staff for working with us on this, and we look forward to voting to advance his nomination out of the Senate Judiciary Committee soon," the pair wrote in a statement.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is set to vote on advancing Blanche's nomination on Tuesday. With the remaining Republican holdouts now on board, he is all but certain to receive a final vote.

He also appears poised to pass a floor vote, with all Republicans expected to back him.
