California school district loses court battle over parent notification policy

A Superior Court judge on Tuesday rejected a request from Chino Valley Unified School District in California to remove an injunction blocking its policy that required employees to notify parents when students identify as transgender or use different names or pronouns. 

Chino Valley Unified School District Board President Sonja Shaw told a local ABC affiliate that she believes staff members will continue to make notifications if necessary in line with an amended district policy that removes any mention of gender. 

The new policy states that parents should be notified whenever the child requests changes to official or "unofficial records." 

Shaw defended the district's position on parental notification, saying that "a kangaroo court with a dishonorable judge isn't going to stop us."
