Columbia University to let go almost 180 researchers funded by grants from the government
The Trump administration has already canceled $400 million in federal funding to the school due to the school's response to antisemitism on campus.
Columbia University is expected to let go of nearly 180 researchers who were funded by canceled federal grants, according to an announcement Tuesday from the school.
These terminations will impact about 20% of researchers at the Ivy League school, according to the Columbia Spectator news outlet.
The Trump administration has already canceled $400 million in federal funding to the school due to the school's response to antisemitism on campus.
“Moving forward, we will be running lighter footprints of research infrastructure in some areas and, in others, maintaining a level of research continuity as we pursue alternate funding sources,” the statement from Columbia reads.
“In some cases, schools and departments are winding down activity but remain prepared to reestablish capabilities if support is restored," the statement continued.
The administrators said they are still in touch with the federal government.
“We have had to make deliberate, considered decisions about the allocation of our financial resources,” the statement says. “Those decisions also impact our greatest resource, our people. We understand this news will be hard.”
