Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed this weekend took aim at President Donald Trump over his repeated references to his first name of "Mohamed."

Trump has, at times, referred to El-Sayed by his first name, or by his full middle name of Abdulrahman. The Democratic candidate has faced scrutiny over his ties to Hasan Piker, a controversial streamer who has said that America deserved 9/11. He has also faced allegations of links to the Muslim Brotherhood.

In a rally in Grand Rapids on Sunday, though, El-Sayed brushed off Trump's criticisms and said, "I don't care how he pronounces my name."

“I don’t even care that he remembers my whole name. Because he can just go on and call me ‘senator’ after November. I will be Senator Mohamed to you, bro," he said, as quoted by The Hill.

El-Sayed is facing off against former Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., in what is expected to be one of the most competitive Senate races of the cycle, and a pivotal contest in the battle for the upper chamber.
