Attorney General Todd Blanche on Thursday said he had no intention to "improperly interfere with elections," but he didn't rule out the possibility that the Justice Department could seek to block states from certifying votes in the midterm elections in a "doomsday" scenario.

As part of its effort to investigate voter rolls for noncitizens voting in federal elections, the Justice Department is considering bringing legal actions against more states before or possibly after the Nov. 3 midterm election, NBC reported, citing unnamed sources.

On Thursday, reporters asked Blanche if he could rule out any such action by the Justice Department to delay the counting of ballots.

Blanche replied that he couldn't rule out an extreme scenario in which the Justice Department would seek to get involved in state and local election officials’ certification process, but otherwise no such actions are being considered.

“It is not DOJ’s intention to, and it’s never our intention to, improperly interfere with elections or the state confirmation process or certification process,” Blanche said, NBC News reported.
