Congressman Chip Roy, R-Texas, on Thursday announced that he was running for governor.

"Texas has a long and proud tradition of rising to defend our homes, our freedom, and our communities," he wrote on the social media platform, X. "I’m running for Attorney General to carry on that legacy… unafraid to fight, unafraid to win, and unafraid to defend Texas at every turn."

Roy has served in the U.S. House, representing the 21st district of Texas, since 2019.

Other Republicans running for Texas attorney general include state Sens. Mayes Middleton and Joan Huffman, and Aaron Reitz, former Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Policy under Pam Bondi at the Department of Justice.

The attorney general of Texas doesn't have term limits. Current Attorney General Ken Paxton has served in the position since 2015.
