Pennsylvania police union head blasts Bob Casey for event with group that called to defund police
"Casey's decision to align himself with these defund the police activists is alarming and extremely dangerous," the union head said.
The head of a Pennsylvania police union slammed Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., for attending a campaign event with Indivisible Philadelphia, a group that has called for defunding the police.
The local chapter of Indivisible, a national progressive group founded in response to former President Donald Trump's 2016 election, hosted Casey on Tuesday, and the following day, Indivisible Philadelphia and Indivisible Pennsylvania announced their endorsement of the senator.
"Casey's decision to align himself with these defund the police activists is alarming and extremely dangerous," Delaware County Fraternal Order of Police President Christopher Eiserman said Wednesday at an event for Casey's competitor, Republican Dave McCormick.
"Casey's record on crime and policing is more in line with Indivisible Philadelphia's agenda than with the people of this great commonwealth," Eiserman also said. "Pennsylvanians deserve better."
During the summer of 2020, Indivisible Philadelphia issued a "Call to Action" and said, "We won’t stop until they #DefundThePolice," referring to the Philadelphia City Council.
"When we said #DefundThePolice we meant fewer officers on the street terrorizing Black and Brown residents. We meant moving away from the racist system of criminalization and penal punishment, and moving toward community-led public safety methods and programs," the group said at the time.
Eiserman's Delaware County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 27 had already endorsed McCormick before Casey appeared at the Indivisible event Tuesday. McCormick posted a picture on Instagram in February of himself with Lodge 27 members.
