Republican wins reelection in NYC neighboring county as Mamdani is elected mayor
Blakeman during his first term worked to combat antisemitism along with other violent and hate crimes and bolstered cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Trump-aligned Republican, was reelected to a second term Tuesday night, as New York City elected the far-left Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani as its next leader.
Blakeman, during his first term as county executive, worked to combat antisemitism along with other violent and hate crimes and bolstered cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. President Donald Trump won the county in 2024.
The Republican said that he called President Donald Trump to notify him of his victory because the president endorsed his campaign, and highlighted key differences between his policies in Nassau County and nearby New York City.
"We had faith in President Trump's policies, and the people of Nassau County wanted us to cooperate with ICE," Blakeman said at a victory rally. "They wanted to get criminals out of our county. They wanted it to be the safest county in America. Lower taxes.
"Four years ago, we made promises. We said that we wouldn't be a sanctuary county," he continued. "We said we would take the masks off the kids and stop oppressing our children here in Nassau County. We said wouldn't raise taxes. We haven't raised taxes one penny in four years. That's a pretty good record."
Blakeman was first elected as county executive in 2022 and defeated county Legislator Seth Koslow for reelection on Tuesday, according to Fox-5 New York.
