Embattled Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla., on Tuesday resigned from Congress in the wake of an ethics probe and allegations that she stole $5 million in COVID-19 relief funds.

Cherfilus-McCormick confirmed her resignation on X, saying that the House Ethics Committee's investigation was "not a fair process."

"Rather than play these political games, I choose to step away so that I can devote my time to fighting for my neighbors in Florida's 20th district. I hereby resign from the 119th Congress, effective immediately," she added.

The Democratic lawmaker had faced calls for her resignation and a push from some members of Congress for her expulsion.

Her resignation follows those of former Reps. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., and Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, both of whom left office amid sexual harassment scandals.
