Year in Review: Pennsylvania energy policy

Though natural gas production has grown in places like Texas and Louisiana, Pennsylvania has lagged behind. The Independent Fiscal Office predicted 2023 will have the fewest wells drilled in the last decade. That decline is a result of significantly lower prices and pipeline constraints. Many pipes have hit capacity to carry out natural gas.

The Permian Basin accounts for nearly 40% of all oil production and nearly 15% of natural gas production in the U.S. It covers over 86,000 square miles – roughly 10 times the size of New Jersey. Roughly 250 miles wide and 300 miles long, it has more than 7,000 fields.
