Former Georgia Republican Lt. Gov Geoff Duncan switches parties
“My decision was centered around my daily struggle to love my neighbor, as a Republican," Duncan wrote in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution op-ed.
Former Georgia Republican Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan on Tuesday announced in an op-ed that he has switched parties to become a Democrat after a fallout with the GOP.
Duncan, who endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris for president in 2024, said there was no one specific event that led to his departure from the Republican Party, but that he had issues with a myriad of things.
The Georgian, who has also been a stark critic of President Donald Trump since the January 6 riot in 2021, attacked Republicans for their handling of health care, Medicaid, gun control and immigration.
“There’s no date on a calendar or line in the sand that points to the exact moment in time my political heart changed, but it has,” he wrote in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution op-ed. “My decision was centered around my daily struggle to love my neighbor, as a Republican.”
Duncan claimed Republicans tend to tell citizens who do not have health insurance to simply "get a job," but that most of his former uninsured constituents do have jobs that do not include insurance for financial or eligibility issues.
“So, the reality is they have a job, just the wrong job,” Duncan wrote. “One that doesn’t offer health insurance or generate enough spare money each month to afford their own health insurance plan.”
He additionally criticized Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill" for allegedly leaving Medicaid funding "in shambles" and allegedly cutting funding for food stamps.
“The list of reasons why I’m now a Democrat continues to grow,” Duncan concluded. “Most importantly, my decision puts me in the best possible position each day to love my neighbor.”
