Polis issues disaster emergency after avian flu outbreak, leading to death of 1.8 million chickens

The outbreak occurred at an egg facility in Weld County and close to 1.8 million chickens will need to be killed as a result

Colorado Governor Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency on Tuesday after an avian flu outbreak at a commercial egg facility.

Close to 1.8 million chickens will have to be "culled, or selectively slaughtered" due to the outbreak, according to a local news report.

Samples from the egg producer in Weld County tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).
