Pope Francis now in two-week hospital stay for respiratory infection put on breathing machine

Pope Francis on Friday was put on a breathing device in his now two-week-long hospital stay for a respiratory infection. 

He was put on the "non-invasive" device after suffered a bronchial spasm, caused him to breathe in vomit, according to the Associated Press.

The Vatican said the 88-year-old Francis responded well to the treatment and is conscious and alert. 

The spasms appear to be a setback for Francis, who reportedly was for the two priors days recovering. 

Francis had one of his lungs removed as a young man and often uses a walker and a wheel chair.

He was also hospitalized in 2023 after having chest pain and a fever.
