Medical laboratory operator Quest Diagnostics said in an update Friday that it discovered a cyber breach this week impacting one of its systems and potentially compromising some records for patients.

The company, which first reported the breach on Thursday, said it is still investigating the incident but noted that it involves "unauthorized access to our Quanum Lab Services Manager system, which certain clients use to place test orders, receive and look-up results."

"Upon discovery of the incident, we paused access to the system and we are continuing to investigate the incident," the company said. "Our core business operations are not impacted and remain up and running."

The company noted in a "Frequently Asked Questions" section regarding the hack that it does believe some patient data within Quanum LSM was accessed and that it is working to investigate the incident to determine the specific data affected.

Quest said that based on the investigation to date, personal information and patient records were likely affected, and it will notify patients whose information was accessed once the investigation is complete.

"We take privacy and security very seriously and are committed to full restoration of our systems as soon as possible," the company added in a statement.
