Vatican says 88-year-old Pope Francis has pneumonia in both lungs

The Vatican announced Tuesday that Pope Francis has been diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.

"The laboratory tests, the chest X-ray and the clinical conditions of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture," the Vatican said.

Francis was admitted Friday to hospital in Rome after being taken there to be treated for bronchitis and was subsequently found to have a polymicrobial infection. 

The 88-year-old pope had part of one lung removed as a young man. And he has since struggled with related health problems, resulted in him having in later in life to use a walker and wheel chair.

Francis was also hospitalized in 2023 after having chest pain and a fever.
