Iran war isn't worth it, most Americans say: Poll

Nearly two-thirds of Americans believe the Iran war is not worth fighting, but the public remains divided on how best to end the conflict, according to a recent survey.

Overall, 64% of Americans in the latest AP-NORC poll said the war was not worth it, while 33% said it was. The result was sharply divided by party lines, with 61% of Republicans backing the war, compared to just 10% of Democrats.

Notably, the public was clearly divided on how best to end the conflict. Overall, 23% wanted to end attacks on Iran, 30% support pursuing a ceasefire and negotiations, 23% want to continue attacks, while 24% said they did not know or had no opinion.

Public priorities appeared primarily concerned with oil and gas prices, with 72% overall saying it was an "extremely/very" important. Seventy percent said the same of negotiating a ceasefire with Iran, while 64% said preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon was "extremely/very" important.

Just 40% said the same of preventing Iran from threatening Israel.

Conducted July 23-27, the survey questioned 1,165 American adults and has a margin of sampling error of +/- 3.7%.
