Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, on Tuesday revealed that special counsel Jack Smith had subpoenaed roughly 5,000 checks from Americans who made donations to President Donald Trump's campaign.
"To protect disclosures to my office, you obtained at least 4782 donor checks. Many of those checks were $5 to $10," Grassley told Smith during a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee. "The list includes checks from constituents in every state of every single member of this committee, both Republicans and Democrats."
"It included 42 checks from Iowans who dared to donate money to Republicans. No matter what you say, there is no legitimate basis for what you did," he added.
Smith appeared before the Judiciary Committee on Tuesday to answer questions about his 2024 prosecution of Trump over his alleged mishandling of classified documents and his efforts to challenge the 2020 election results.
