A livid House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday furiously condemned the Supreme Court's ruling that birthright citizenship is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment.

"Today’s ruling is antithetical to the rule of law and endangers our national security. Our country should be under no obligation to permit illegal immigration to America for the sole purpose of engineering citizenship," he posted on X.
"This issue is too important and too precious to get wrong. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what the Supreme Court has done."

Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined with the court's liberal justices in Trump v. Barbara in finding that children born in the U.S. to persons unlawfully or temporarily in the country were citizens at birth.

The ruling struck down President Donald Trump's executive order directing federal agencies to interpret the 14th Amendment as not granting citizenship to the children of illegal aliens.

Trump has since urged Congress to pass legislation to end birthright citizenship, though the constitutional viability of any such bills would be questionable.

Johnson has not announced any legislation in response to the ruling.
