Kevin McCarthy fundraises against California redistricting: Report
McCarthy reportedly hopes to raise as much as $100 million.
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is reportedly working to raise a sizable war chest to fight California's redistricting effort, Politico reported, citing "three people familiar with the campaign's planning."
McCarthy has remained relatively out of the spotlight since resigning from Congress in 2023. He became the first speaker of the House removed by Congress due to an effort by then-Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., that he attributed to frustration with the California Republican's spending deals.
Under Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., the state's Democrats have launched an effort to redistrict the state in response to a similar effort in Texas from Republicans.
Working against Newsom, however, is polling data suggesting that a clear majority of Californians support maintaining their independent redistricting commission.
