Republicans went on offense Monday in the wake of yet another assassination attempt against President Donald Trump, asserting that Democrats were fostering a "left-wing cult of hatred" that drives adherents to violent outbursts.

"The left-wing cult of hatred against the president and all of those who support him and work for him has gotten multiple people hurt and killed and it almost did so again this weekend," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said during the press briefing.

Leavitt made the remarks after a gunman attempted to storm the White House Correspondents Association dinner on Saturday evening. The suspect, Cole Allen, is in custody and faces arraignment on Monday.

Speaking on the "John Solomon Reports" podcast on Monday, Rep. Abe Hamadeh, R-Ariz., excoriated former President Barack Obama for downplaying and obfuscating the motivations of the alleged gunman.

"The reality is that this, this gunman, this would be assassin, tried to kill the president, tried to kill his administration officials," he said. "And what Barack Obama with his statement, you know he this is a former president at a time when we knew the facts. We knew that the man had a manifesto that detailed who he was targeting for him to try to change reality and say we don't yet know the motives. Well we do."

"I mean, we quickly forget that just last year, Virginia elected Jay Jones a for as attorney general who just who called for the death of his political opponents," he added. "You know, and so we see the left wing violence is scary, and I don't see the mainstream media calling it out enough, and I hope it was a wake up call at the White House Correspondents Dinner the other night, because, you know, Barack Obama should not get away with saying that by saying that we don't know the motive."

"We do know what the motive is, and he has to call it out. Why? Because too often it's his side. It's the left wing media," he added.
