Senate moves to add Iran sanctions to Russian sanctions plan

The Senate is moving to add sanctions on Iran to an upcoming Russian sanctions bill that is expected to pass before the August recess.

The move comes amid the renewal of active hostilities between the U.S. and Iran, following the collapse of a tentative peace framework. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Senate Majority Leader John Thune was optimistic that sufficient bipartisan support existed for adding the sanctions.

“I think everybody’s fine with it because we would do it anyway. Iran sanctions is something we’ve had in place for the last 30 years," he said.

The Senate is set to break for an August recess at the end of the month, setting up a tight deadline for the lawmakers to advance the bill. That deadline is also top of mind for the White House, which has warned that President Donald Trump is losing patience with the Senate and its unwillingness to approve major legislation.
