Spain claims nearly all border crossers have returned to Morocco

The Spanish government on Friday said that most of the migrants from Morocco that stormed Ceuta this week had returned to Morocco.

The government also confirmed that the death toll had reached at least 57, CNN reported.

Tens of thousands of migrants this week stormed the Spanish territories of Ceuta and Melilla, two remaining exclaves belonging to Spain in North Africa.

The development saw footage of violent riots go viral on social media and prompted Italy to suspend free travel with Spain. Several European nations have since called for Spain's ouster from the Schengen area, a free-of-movement zone consisting mostly of European Union territories.
