Co-pilot flying doomed Learjet who spoke to controllers as plane went down identified
Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras called air traffic controllers moments before the crash to say that they had hit moderate turbulence and were managing ice, according to a transcript of the calls.
The co-pilot of a Learjet that fell over 20,000 feet per minute before crashing into the ground in Palm Beach County, Florida, has been identified as Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras.
Filgueiras, 20, got her pilot's license while still in high school, the New York Post reported.
Her mother, Camila, told the Post she had been working as a commercial pilot for nine months, and Camila's husband, Thiago Corteleti, said the woman had 1,300 hours of flying experience.
Just before the crash, Filgueiras texted her boyfriend, saying they were experiencing turbulence and ice.
Filgueiras called air traffic controllers moments before the crash to say that they had hit moderate turbulence and were managing ice, according to a transcript of the calls. The jet then encountered precipitation and Filgueiras told controllers they were going to climb to get above it.
In the next moment, she was heard declaring an emergency, saying the aircraft was rapidly losing altitude.
All nine people, including Filgueiras, died in the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board has opened an investigation.
"Today's plane crash in Palm Beach County, Florida is a horrific tragedy," Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a social media post
