Trump admin freezes $2.1B in funds for Chicago amid shutdown

The Trump administration on Friday withheld $2.1 billion in funding for the city of Chicago amid the government shutdown.

The Windy City has been a focal point of Democratic opposition to President Donald Trump's deportation policies in recent weeks after Washington sent the Department of Homeland Security to sweep the city for illegal aliens.

The withholding of funds, moreover, comes as Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought ramps up pressure on Democrats and their constituencies over the ongoing shutdown, the Wall Street Journal reported.

After the Senate failed to approve either of two competing resolutions to fund the government on Tuesday evening, the government shutdown on Wednesday morning.

Republicans have insisted that Democrats seek to increase funding for illegal aliens to receive health care, while Democrats have insisted they are working to lower costs for Americans.
