Trump blasts Cornyn, Tillis over stonewalling Blanche confirmation

President Donald Trump on Thursday excoriated Sens. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas over their refusal to commit to backing acting Attorney General Todd Blanche for confirmation.

Blanche has held the post in an acting capacity since Trump fired Pam Bondi earlier this year. His nomination has yet to clear the Judiciary Committee and needs the support to all Republicans to clear that hurdle. Cornyn and Tillis, for their parts, have expressed concerns with Blanche's nomination.

"Todd Blanche is a STAR, and everyone knows it! He has the potential to go down as one of the Greatest Attorney Generals of All Time. However, John Cornyn, of Texas, and Thom Tillis, of North Carolina, both of whom I refused to Endorse, and whose political careers have been ended by my action, are refusing to vote for this Great Nominee, who will remain, in any event, as Acting," he posted on Truth Social.

"Remember, both Cornyn and Tillis voted for Merrick Garland, and others, too numerous to mention," he added. "I have no objection to temporarily withdrawing Todd’s name, if they do not do the right thing, and putting him back after Cornyn and Tillis are out of office."

Neither Tillis nor Cornyn are facing reelection in November. Tillis declined to seek reelection while Cornyn lost his primary to the Trump-backed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
