President Donald Trump on Thursday took exception to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer quipping that a longer shutdown was beneficial to Democrats, suggesting it betrayed opportunistic motivations.

"Chuck Schumer proclaimed this morning that every day gets better for them," Trump said during a Cabinet meeting. "No, every day it's actually getting worse for them. And having a rebellion in the Democrat Party because they want to stop."

"And if you saw all of Schumer's I watched last night like 10 different times over the years. He said, 'You can't shut down government. You can't shut down''. And now he's the one that shut it down," Trump went on. "So this is a confession that he's acting not to serve the people, but to serve the partisan interests of this party. And I don't think he's serving him well, because they're way down. Look, they just lost an election in a landslide."

Schumer told Punchbowl News earlier on Thursday that he believed a protracted shutdown was beneficial to Democrats, with the momentum moving away from the GOP.

"Better for Schumer. Worse for Americans. What a vile sentiment from an alleged leader in our country," Vice President JD Vance quipped back on social media.
