President Donald Trump on Monday called for the Department of Justice to investigate Maryland's distribution of 500,000 mail-in ballots, accusing Gov. Wes Moore, D-Md., of rigging elections to benefit his party.

"In Maryland, they sent out 500,000 Illegal Mail In Ballots, and they got caught!" Trump posted on Truth Social. "So now, they’re going to send out 500,000 more Mail In Ballots, but nobody knows what’s happening with the first 500,000 they sent."

"In addition, many of these Ballots went to Democrats, so any Republican running in Maryland doesn’t have a chance! This was done by the Corrupt Governor of the State, Wes Moore," he insisted. "He allowed this to happen in order to make sure that Democrats win."

The Maryland State Board of Elections (SBE) this week confirmed that it had erroneously distributed mail-in ballots to members of the wrong party for the upcoming primaries. It has, however, denied wrongdoing, CBS News reported.

Trump, for his part, insisted that the error represented a larger, systematic problem in Maryland that worked to benefit Democrats, who have traditionally dominated the state's politics in federal elections.

"It never made sense to me that Maryland was considered an automatic Democrat State, but now I see why," Trump went on. "I’m sure this has gone on for years. I’m going to ask the Attorney General of the United States, and the DOJ, to bring an immediate investigation into this situation."

Prior to Moore, Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, served two terms in the state.
