Trump, DOJ settle with IRS over tax return leak
Trump's tax returns were the subject of scrutiny for the better part of a decade.
President Donald Trump and the Department of Justice on Monday settled a lawsuit with the IRS over the leak of his tax returns.
Trump sued the IRS for $10 billion in January of this year over the 2023 incident in which IRS contractor Charles Littejohn leaked his personal tax records. Littlejohn pleaded guilty and received a five-year prison sentence.
The scope of the settlement was not immediately clear, though Trump's attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the case on Monday, Politico reported.
Trump's tax returns were the subject of scrutiny for the better part of a decade. In 2016, the presidential candidate declined to release them, despite considerable public pressure.
Myriad Democratic efforts to force their release ended in failure, and it was not until Littlejohn's leaks that the public got a glimpse of the president's finances behind the scenes.
