Trump meets Jerome Powell amid interest rate feud
Powell has previously stated that he would not step down at Trump's behest and it remains unclear whether Trump has the authority to fire him in such a case.
President Donald Trump on Thursday met with Chairman of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell to discuss the economy amid high-profile public spats over interest rates and talk of Powell's possible termination.
Trump has repeatedly called for interest rate cuts in light of lower inflation, though the Fed has opted to keep interest rates steady amid uncertainty from Trump's tariffs.
"At the President's invitation, Chair Powell met with the President today at the White House to discuss economic developments including for growth, employment, and inflation," the Fed stated in a press release. "Chair Powell did not discuss his expectations for monetary policy, except to stress that the path of policy will depend entirely on incoming economic information and what that means for the outlook."
Powell has previously stated that he would not step down at Trump's behest and it remains unclear whether Trump has the authority to fire him in such a case.
