Trump signs tariff-free beef deal with Brazil, Argentina

President Donald Trump on Friday signed an agreement allowing the importation of 300,000 metric tons of beef from Brazil and Argentina, without subjecting them to tariffs.

The deal comes as the president works to lower prices ahead of the midterms, while attempting to balance cost control with reforms to bolster the domestic herds.

“We’re doing it in a very limited fashion because our ranchers can handle it, but our ranchers really needed a little bit of help, and our ranchers want the prices to be down too,” Trump said, according to The Hill.

The domestic ranching industry has been critical of the move, which will lower prices for consumers, but undercut their own profits while they recover from large-scale culls under the Biden administration.

To assuage American ranchers, Trump has also moved to allow them to process their own meat, rather than rely on major meat-packing companies.
