CNN's Van Jones this week opined that Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., had "flushed herself down the toilet" with her unexpected endorsement of Republican Mike Rogers for Senate.

Stevens, who lost to Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed in the primary, abruptly backed Rogers on Sunday, earning near-universal condemnation from her own party and praise from Republicans. With House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries confirming that his party would discuss Stevens after the midterms, her career on the left appears to be in dire straits.

Speaking on CNN, Jones opined that El-Sayed's campaign messaging "has been too narrow, and he’s left out too many people. But he has shown a level of discipline on this campaign, and Haley just flushed herself down the toilet."

Stevens has long been regarded as a moderate Democrat and was the establishment pick in the party primary. Her narrow loss to El-Sayed was much closer than polls had suggested. She initially backed El-Sayed after her defeat and touted party unity against Rogers, making her defection all the more unexpected.

Rogers and El-Sayed are set to face off on Tuesday, in what is expected to be one of the most competitive contests in the battle for control of the Senate. The winner will replace Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., who is retiring.
