Democratic strategist claims Jewish donors are leaving party for tax breaks, not antisemitism
The criticism was aimed at liberal Jewish donors who decided to pull funding from elite schools and Democratic organizations to donate to President Donald Trump's presidential campaign last year.
Long-time Democratic strategist James Carville on Wednesday claimed that the reason Jewish Democrats are leaving the party is not because of antisemitism as some have claimed, but instead for a tax cut.
The comment occurred during an episode of Carville's “Politics War Room” podcast, and referred to liberal Jewish donors who decided to pull funding from certain Ivy League schools and Democratic organizations to donate to President Donald Trump's presidential campaign last year.
Elite universities like Columbia and Harvard served as the epicenter of violent antisemitic protests last year, prompting wealthy alumni like Bill Ackman to stop donating to the schools. Ackman also endorsed Trump.
"A lot of really wealthy Jewish fundraisers – And they say, ‘Look James, I’m a Democrat, but I can’t be a part of the party because of what happened at Columbia,'" Carville told co-host Al Hunt. “What the f— did the Democrats have to do with what happened in Columbia?"
The two hosts claimed that Trump was not actually "fighting antisemitism" as some believe, and was a "complete fraud."
“Most Jewish people see right through [Trump], but the ones that don’t see through it, they just don’t," Carville said. "At the end of the day, they just want their f***ing tax cut. And you can see it every day."
