The Intercept news outlet tries to raise money to dig up dirt on DeSantis
DeSantis has not announced whether he is running for president in 2024, but he is the closest candidate to Trump in hypothetical primary matchups
The Intercept, a nonprofit news outlet, is using a Democrat fundraising platform to raise money to investigate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, considered the only possible candidate to beat Donald Trump in the 2024 GOP presidential primary.
In an email Monday titled, "We’re investigating Ron DeSantis. Will you donate $5?" the Intercept said it has "already made multiple trips to Florida and uncovered several unsavory scoops" about the governor, but more money is needed to "uncover the truth about Ron DeSantis and the megadonors behind him."
When readers click to donate, they are directed to a page for ActBlue Charities, which is an arm of the Democratic campaign software platform ActBlue.
The Intercept also said in the email that DeSantis, who has not declared his candidacy, is "the only candidate who even comes close to challenging Donald Trump in the polls for the Republican presidential nomination," but "far less well known is his actual record as governor and representative."
Though DeSantis has not announced whether he is running for president in 2024, he is the closest candidate to Trump in hypothetical primary matchups.
