Sinclair Broadcasting announces it will not carry Jimmy Kimmel's show when it returns Tuesday
Sinclair said that it would be playing other news during the Kimmel time-slot on Tuesday but that it was still debating whether that would be a permanent decision.
The Sinclair Broadcasting Group on Monday night announced it will be "preempting" late-night host Jimmy Kimmel's show on all of its ABC stations when it returns to programming on Tuesday.
ABC earlier Monday announced it had reached an agreement with Kimmel to put the show back on the air after deciding last week to suspend it indefinitely from airing on the network. The situation arose after the host delivered a monologue in which he claimed President Donald Trump's "MAGA gang" was trying to politically benefit from the murder of conservative-activist Charlie Kirk.
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang trying to characterize this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” Kimmel said during the monologue.
Sources told the New York Post that Kimmel will return without apologizing for his inflammatory statement, but he is expected to address the controversy in his Tuesday night monologue. However, it was unclear if all ABC affiliates would carry the show.
Sinclair said that it will be showing news during the Kimmel time-slot on Tuesday but that it was still debating whether that would be a permanent decision.
"Beginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming," the company said in a statement. "Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return."
ABC's other major station owner, Nexstar Media Group, has not yet publicly commented on whether it will air Kimmel's return.
