American Airlines flight forced to abort landing at DC airport to avoid colliding with other plane

An American Airlines flight had to abort landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport, outside of Washington, D.C., to avoid colliding with another plane taking off on the same runway, among the latest in aviation mishaps that as drawn attentin to the FeFederal Aviation Administration and overall air safety.

The FAA said the incident took place Tuesday morning when the Airbus A319 arriving from Boston, was preparing to land.

An air traffic controller instructed American Flight 2246 to perform a "go-around" at the airport to separate the planes officials at the FAA said, according to media reports.

An American Airlines spokesperson said the plane landed safely.

This incident takes place less than a month after 67 people were killed in a midair plane collision at the same airport.

Earlier this week, a Southwest Airlines jet narrowly avoided a collision with a private jet in Chicago after it decided to ditch its landing attempt just feet from the ground.
